If you're searching for a midsize three-row crossover, you can't go wrong with the 2021 Ford Explorer near Charlestown IN. It's spacious, gets good fuel economy, and includes many safety features as standard.

When the Ford Explorer was first introduced to us it was built on the same body-on-frame setup as the F-150 and had rear-wheel drive. At some point, a unibody (all-in-one piece) frame and front-wheel drive was installed. Last year the Explorer was totally redesigned, keeping the unibody construction, but dropping FWD in favor of RWD once more. It makes sense, as handling and overall balance improve drastically when you stop trying to both power and steer a vehicle from the same end. And even though body-on-frame design makes for good towing capability, keeping the unibody hasn't hurt the Explorer's towing ability. In actuality, the Ford Explorer is one of the better choices for towing in the three-row SUV segment.

Thanks to the rear-wheel drive's precise handling, the 2021 Explorer provides an excellent and smooth riding experience. Combining the extensive range of driver assist/safety features, the comfy cabin, and connectivity technology, the 2021 Ford Explorer near Charlestown IN is as well suited for long journeys as it is for running errands around town.

There's a longer wheelbase on the new model, again thanks to RWD, which results in more legroom for all passengers. The way back row is still tight for adults, and the cargo space isn't as large as some rivals, but there's a removable floor panel that will open up more space behind the raised third row that's more than any competitors.

The 2021 Ford Explorer near Charlestown IN comes in six different versions: base Explorer, XLT, Limited, Limited Hybrid, ST, and Platinum. All-wheel drive is standard equipment on the ST and Platinum trims, but you can add it as a $2000 option on all other trims.

The lower three trim levels have a turbocharged 2.3 liter inline 4-cylinder engine that delivers 300 hp with 310 lb-ft torque. EPA fuel ratings are 21 city/28 highway/24 combined mpg for RWD and 20/27/23 for AWD models.

The Limited Hybrid has a 3.3 liter gasoline V6 engine with an electric motor for a system output of 318 hp and 322 lb-ft torque. Fuel economy is 27 city and 29 highway for RWD and 23/26 for AWD, which is still an option at this level.

The ST and Platinum trims come with a twin-turbocharged 3.0 liter V6 engine. In the Platinum it delivers 365 hp and is rated at 18 mpg city and 24 mpg highway. With 400 hp produced in the ST trim, only the Dodge Durango SRT puts out more, with its 475 hp 6.4 liter V8.  The ST version is rated the same as Platinum in fuel economy. With its stiffer suspension and extra power, the Explorer ST is truly a performance crossover SUV. All-wheel drive is standard on both the ST and Platinum trims. A 10-speed automatic transmission is equipped standard across the board.

Mandatory safety features such as stability control, anti-lock brakes, and traction control are in every Explorer model, along with eight airbags. Also standard across the 2021 range of Explorers is Ford's Co-Pilot360 collection of driver assist features. Limited trim and above have the Co-Pilot360 Assist+ package as well.

Crash tests administered by the NHTSA earned a 5-star score overall, with front and side impact protection earning five stars. The rollover test earned a 4-star rating, which is still good. The IIHS awarded the 2021 Ford Explorer near Charlestown IN a Top Safety Pick+ after it had earned top scores in most crash-test obstacles. The child seat LATCH points and headlights were deemed Acceptable, which is the second-best score.

All in all, the 2021 Ford Explorer is a great choice for a family vehicle. When you're ready to try one, come on over to Jim O'Neal Ford at 516 S. Indiana Ave, Sellersburg, IN.
